Expanding Ghosts

Material Needed

1 empty water bottle
1 white balloon
1 small funnel
1 tablespoon baking soda
1/2 cup vinegar
Sharpie/permanent marker to draw on the faces

Step 1

Draw any ghost face on a white balloon while it is deflated.
Use the sharpie/permanent marker for this step.

Step 2

Measure and pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the empty water bottle.

Step 3

Measure 1 Tablespoon of baking soda.
Using the funnel, carefully add the baking soda into the balloon.

Step 4

Secure the open end of the balloon on to the top of the water bottle.
Be careful not to dump the contents in the balloon in the bottle just yet.

Step 5

When ready, hold the balloon upright and the contents will drop in the water bottle.
Allow the backing soda to mix with the vinegar and watch your ghost expand!

What just happened? A Chemical reaction! Mixing vinegar and baking soda creates carbon dioxide, a gas present when we breathe out. The carbon dioxide bubbled up out of the bottle and inflated the balloon!
